MFE Names 2022 Award Winners

Over the past year, the multifamily industry has faced its share of uncertainty with the lingering effects of the pandemic, supply chain and labor challenges, and economic uncertainty. However, the industry continues to be resilient, putting its residents at the forefront. The 2022 Multifamily Executive Awards showcase these efforts by highlighting the industry’s leaders, innovative projects, and inspiring programs.

This year, three industry executives will be recognized in the September issue of the magazine as well as at the annual MFE Conference, which will take place Sept. 28 to 30 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Daryl Carter, founder, CEO, and chairman, Avanath Capital Management

Founder, chairman, and CEO of Avanath Capital Management, Daryl Carter is the newest inductee to the MFE Hall of Fame. With nearly four decades of commercial real estate industry experience, Carter directs the overall strategies and operations of the California-based investment firm that acquires, renovates, and operates affordable and workforce multifamily communities. Since its launch in 2008, Avanath has acquired $2.5 billion of properties comprising 10,000 apartment units.

Prior to Avanath, Carter was an executive managing director of Centerline Capital Group. He joined Centerline when Capri Capital Finance, which he co-founded, was acquired by the firm in 2005.

The MFE Hall of Fame was launched in 2017. Carter joins former Hall of Fame inductees Bob DeWitt, GID; Rick Campo, Camden Property Trust; Doug Bibby, National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC); Tom Bozzuto, The Bozzuto Group; and Jonathan Rose, Jonathan Rose Cos.

This year’s Executive of the Year is David Schwartz, CEO and chairman of Waterton. Under his leadership, Chicago-based Waterton has grown from $7.2 billion in real estate assets under management as of the end of 2020 to $9.1 billion in real estate assets one year later. In February 2021, the firm closed its value-add comingled fund at its hard cap of $1.5 billion of equity commitments from a diverse group of global institutional investors. Through 2021, the firm expanded its footprint in Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco and closed the year with the acquisition of 1,100 units across two assets in Chicago. In addition, the 35-year industry veteran also is immediate past chair of NMHC, representing the industry trade group and its members throughout the pandemic.

Mariana Robina, senior vice president of investments and finance at Eagle Property Capital, is MFE’s 2022 Rising Star. Robina, who was the first employee at the vertically integrated real estate investment manager focused on the value-add multifamily space, has moved through the ranks since she started in 2013 and is part of the executive leadership team. Her responsibilities include acquisitions, due diligence, portfolio management, structuring, accounting/financial control, and investor relations for the firm. She also is the co-founder of Eagle Property Capital’s property management firm, Vidalta, which she helped establish in 2015 and today has more than 5,000 units under management.

Out of nearly 250 nominations, the jurors–Benjamin Kasdan, KTGY; Sandi Silk, Jefferson Apartment Group; and Karen Smith, BH Management Services—also have selected 34 project and program finalists in 13 categories. The grand winners in each category as well as MFE’s overall community of the year also will be recognized at the awards ceremony at the annual conference and in the October issue of the magazine.
